Strelitzia reginae ‘Mandela’s Gold’
A cultivar of the South African native Bird of Paradise, named in tribute to Nelson Mandela. This evergreen, clump-forming variety boasts an eye-catching presence, even when not in bloom, thanks to its large, glaucous foliage reminiscent of banana leaves rising from underground rhizomes. At maturity, it reaches approximately 4 feet in height and 3-4 feet in width, featuring stunning crested flowers on long, sturdy stalks. These vibrant flowers, showcasing brilliant yellow and vivid purple hues, emerge from a horizontal gray and pink beak-like spathe. Each spathe bears 5-7 flowers blooming in succession, making it an excellent choice for cut flowers. This Bird of Paradise thrives in containers, particularly when crowded, enhancing its blooming potential.
