Muehlenbeckia platyclada
This bizarre-looking plant [which used to be called Homalocladium platycladum] hails from New Guinea & the Solomon Islands & is known as “Tapeworm Plant” or “Ribbonbush” due to the completely flattened, 2-D shape of it’s phylloclades {=Modified stems that act as leaves!} As this plant grows it will keep surprising you as it sporadically grows new flattened stems in a sprawling habit from all sides of the plant. It may also sprout leaves from time-to-time but these leaves are meant to be deciduous and will fall off eventually– this is normal for this plant! If kept happy, Muehlenbeckia will form short-lived, TINY flowers on each of the joints of it’s flattened stem. This is a must-have for any true plant collector!
